Veterinary roles we recruit

Who does your practice
need to hire?

Choose the recruitment service for your vacancy, from a general-practice associate to a specialist or multi-hospital leader.

For Baltimore veterinary employers

One metro, six jurisdictions.
Specific hospital assignments.

A Hampden associate role, a Howard County medical director search and an Annapolis emergency appointment need different briefs. Start with the hospital address, jurisdiction, clinical resources and schedule, then agree the search with BEGHR.

Associate veterinarians

Specify independent procedures, appointment capacity and doctor overlap. If recruiting a new graduate, name the mentor and protect teaching time; Maryland exempts a first-time registrant from continuing education proof for 12 months.

Plan an associate search →

Specialist and emergency appointments

Define the discipline, required credentials, shift pattern and resources already available. Explain referral communication, overnight staffing and inpatient handover, and name the technicians who support the shift.

Scope a specialist role →

Medical and regional leadership

List the hospitals and decision authority, and name the Responsible Veterinarian at each site. Separate clinical workload from protected time for coaching, clinical standards and team development.

Define a medical director role →

Put the hospital address, jurisdiction and site details in the brief.

Use the actual work address, the county or Baltimore City, and any additional facilities. Do not present a Harford County vacancy as interchangeable with a Baltimore City hospital. A rotating role should state which days belong to which site and whether movement between sites happens between working days or during a clinical shift.

Keep one clear decision process.

Choose the clinical and operational interviewers, confirm the employer-approved package and identify who can authorize an offer. Use the same role-related criteria for every candidate and give one person responsibility for feedback. Confirm the candidate’s Maryland license status before a start date is set. Review the hiring brief and candidate scorecard before outreach.

Choose the service that matches the vacancy.

This is permanent placement for employers. Your practice hires the selected candidate directly. An immediate relief shift needs a separate arrangement; this service does not promise a locum available today. Job seekers can start with BEGHR’s veterinary placement page; the pricing form here is for employer inquiries.

Baltimore veterinary hiring context for employers

The Maryland State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners states that licenses for veterinarians and hospitals expire June 30 of every year, that veterinarians must earn 18 continuing education hours every year, and that a veterinarian first licensed in May or June must still renew by July 1. Its applicant page says the license and registration must be complete before a veterinarian practices in Maryland, that the Board reviews Type 2 and Type 3 applications and is scheduled to meet on the fourth Thursday of every month, and that a letter of good standing from another board can take up to a month to process. Maryland’s Labor and Employment Article treats a noncompete provision in an employment contract with a licensed veterinary practitioner or veterinary technician as null and void, and it requires a posting for work performed at least in part in Maryland to disclose the wage range and a general description of benefits. O*NET OnLine, citing Bureau of Labor Statistics 2025 wage data, lists the Baltimore-Columbia-Towson median annual wage for veterinarians slightly below the Maryland median and well above the national median, for veterinary technicians slightly below both, and for veterinary assistants above the national median and slightly below the Maryland median. The University of Maryland catalog describes the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine as a four-year DVM program whose first three years are taught at Virginia Tech, and the Community College of Baltimore County lists an in-person veterinary technology associate degree at Essex. The same state rules apply to every Baltimore employer, so confirm them before the Baltimore search starts.

  • Start date and renewal: the Board runs licenses from July 1 to June 30 and requires renewal by July 1 even for a veterinarian first licensed in May or June, so keep the license date, the renewal date and the first clinic day as separate lines in the offer.
  • Continuing education support: Maryland requires 18 hours a year, all of which may be earned online, and its regulation allows no more than 6 hours on nonscientific topics, so state the paid time and the course costs the practice covers.
  • Responsible Veterinarian: a Maryland hospital must operate under the direct supervision and control of a licensed veterinarian who is its employee, so name who holds that role and who succeeds that doctor if they leave.
  • Offer terms: Maryland voids a noncompete provision in a veterinarian’s or technician’s employment contract and requires the wage range and a benefits description in the posting, so put pay, schedule and retention terms in writing.
  • Hospital type: say whether the role sits in general practice, around-the-clock emergency or specialty referral, because Baltimore-area hospitals describe all three models on their own sites.

Market context is attributed to Maryland Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, Board veterinarian licensure and reinstatement page, Board continuing education page, Board hospital owner licensure page, Board examinations page, Board frequently asked questions, Maryland Labor and Employment section 3-716, Maryland Labor and Employment section 3-304.2, O*NET OnLine veterinarian wages by area, O*NET OnLine veterinary technician wages by area, O*NET OnLine veterinary assistant wages by area, University of Maryland graduate catalog, veterinary medicine and Community College of Baltimore County veterinary technology. These are third-party and state sources, not BEGHR claims.

Plan Maryland credential checks before the start date.

Use the Maryland Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and licensee lookup for the relevant professional record. Maryland licenses veterinarians through the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners within the Maryland Department of Agriculture, and registered veterinary technicians are registered through the same Board. Assign a person to verify license status and the expiration date, record the verification date and resolve questions with the Board. Check any additional specialty credentials required by the employer with the issuing organization.

For a candidate moving from another state, review the Maryland veterinarian licensure and reinstatement page. Do not treat an out-of-state license or a preferred start date as confirmation that Maryland requirements are satisfied. The Board states that the license and registration must be complete before a veterinarian practices in Maryland and that it reviews Type 2 and Type 3 applications at a monthly meeting. The Board determines eligibility and timing; BEGHR does not issue licenses.

For continuing education, renewal and hospital licensing rules, see the Board continuing education requirements and the Board hospital owner licensure page.

Veterinary recruitment coverage

Baltimore and
surrounding communities.

A Baltimore veterinary search works best when the hospital address comes before the city label. The Maryland Manual says Baltimore City has been considered on a par with county jurisdictions since 1851, so Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel, Howard, Harford and Carroll counties are different workplaces under different local governments. Business Executive Group uses the employer’s role, schedule and location to scope a permanent search.

Name the street address, municipality and county, and keep Baltimore City neighborhoods separate from Baltimore County places. Baltimore County has no incorporated municipalities in the Census Bureau’s place-by-county file, so Towson, Pikesville, Owings Mills, Cockeysville, Catonsville, Essex and Dundalk are census designated places. Annapolis, Bel Air, Havre de Grace and Westminster are incorporated, while Columbia, Ellicott City, Elkridge, Glen Burnie, Odenton and Eldersburg are census designated places. A mailing name can differ from the Census place: the Census geocoder puts an Annapolis address on Bestgate Road in Parole, an Elkridge address on Marie Curie Drive in Columbia and a Bel Air address on Baltimore Pike in Bel Air North. Coverage on this site is limited to Maryland; a hospital in another state falls under a different licensing authority.

Baltimore City southeast waterfront

Canton, Fells Point, Federal Hill and Highlandtown are separate neighborhood statistical areas in Baltimore City, which the Maryland Manual says has been considered on a par with county jurisdictions since the Maryland Constitution of 1851. The city’s neighborhood layer also lists Harbor East, Little Italy, Locust Point and Brewers Hill as their own areas, so give the street address and the neighborhood. A Baltimore City address and a Baltimore County address describe different jurisdictions with different local rules.

Baltimore City north and central

Hampden, Mount Vernon and Roland Park are separate neighborhood statistical areas in Baltimore City. Remington, Woodberry, Medfield, Guilford and Mount Washington are listed as their own areas, and several border more than one of the neighborhoods on this site. Name the neighborhood Baltimore assigns to the hospital address, and list any second site on its own line.

Baltimore County north

Towson, Pikesville, Owings Mills and Cockeysville are census designated places in Baltimore County, which has no incorporated municipalities in the Census file. Towson is the county seat, according to the Maryland Manual. State the street address and say whether the site is in the county or in Baltimore City, and list any Timonium, Reisterstown or Randallstown site separately.

Baltimore County west and east

Catonsville, Essex and Dundalk are census designated places in Baltimore County. Catonsville borders Ellicott City and Ilchester in Howard County, Essex borders Dundalk and Middle River, and Dundalk borders Baltimore city. Keep a west-side Catonsville assignment apart from an east-side Essex or Dundalk assignment, since they sit on opposite sides of Baltimore City.

Anne Arundel County

Annapolis is an incorporated city and the county seat. Glen Burnie and Odenton are census designated places, and Fort Meade, Crofton, Severn and Gambrills are separate census designated places beside Odenton. A mailing address with an Annapolis name can fall in a place such as Parole, so state the street address and the municipality.

Howard County

Columbia, Ellicott City and Elkridge are census designated places in Howard County, and none is an incorporated municipality. Ellicott City is the county seat, and Columbia covers 31.93 square miles in the Census TIGERweb data. An Elkridge mailing address can fall in Columbia, so state the street address and the community.

Harford and Carroll counties

Bel Air and Havre de Grace in Harford County and Westminster in Carroll County are incorporated municipalities, and Eldersburg in Carroll County is a census designated place. Bel Air and Westminster are the county seats. Harford County extends to the Susquehanna River and Carroll County is governed by county commissioners, so state the street address and county for each role.

Employer questions

Veterinary recruiting questions

Which veterinary positions can Baltimore employers recruit through BEGHR?

The service covers permanent associate veterinarians, veterinary specialists, emergency DVMs, surgery appointments, medical directors and regional veterinary leaders. Search fit depends on the role, clinical requirements and employer brief. The practice makes the final hiring decision.

Is this for employers hiring veterinarians or for job applications?

This website is for practice owners and employer hiring teams seeking permanent veterinary staff. Its form requests a hiring brief and returns a placement estimate after employer opt-in. It is not an open-jobs directory or a candidate application form.

How does milestone billing work?

Agree the role, estimated fee range, billable milestones and payment terms before the search begins. Recruiting uses an hourly, pay-as-you-go model within the agreed range. BEGHR’s published placement process starts billing after applicants are sent. Invoices follow the agreed cadence, at least monthly during billable service delivery. BEGHR handles client billing and account questions.

Do we pay if a search does not result in a hire?

Milestone billing pays for agreed work as the search progresses, so completed billable milestones may still be payable without a placement. Your client agreement specifies the billing triggers, amounts, due dates and any cancellation terms.

Where can we see our placement price?

Select your role, complete the hiring questions and submit your employer contact details through the pricing form to receive an estimated fee range. BEGHR confirms the role classification, final fee and payment milestones before you engage the service.

How long does placement take?

BEGHR’s placement timeframe is 23–55 days. Timing depends on the role, candidate availability and the employer’s hiring process.

How does BEGHR pricing compare with contingency recruiting?

BEGHR offers placement at typically 50% less than contingency recruiting and 50% off second and subsequent hires for the same role. Use the pricing form for an estimate and confirm your fee and repeat-hire eligibility before starting.

What fill rate does BEGHR report?

BEGHR reports 86% fill rate on active searches across its placement service. This provider-wide figure is not a city-specific or veterinary-only result and does not guarantee an individual hiring outcome.

Who receives my employer inquiry?

Business Executive Group receives your contact information, selected roles, qualification answers, placement estimate and the originating website and page through its existing BEGHR lead intake. This is an employer inquiry, not a candidate job application.

How are placement fees confirmed?

The instant-pricing form uses BEGHR’s role categories and current retail ranges to show an estimate after you submit your employer details. The provider confirms the actual category, scope, payment milestones and commercial terms before a search engagement begins.
